WOMAN OF 1000 YEARS *

Fine Art Degree Show, Chelsea College of Arts 2024

'Woman of 1000 Years' is the epitome to me of woman and self. She is something that transcends my own rational bounds but is a cruel reminder of a controlled and suppressed soul. Through utilizing the senses and exasperating them in the metaphysical space, the soundscape and sculpture reach a depth of time, age, humility and human contact.

She has been created to show a visible spiritual journey of rebirth, tribulations of womanhood and an afterlife that wasn't designed for her to rest peacefully, and how the process will continue without systematic change. From the different senses of being in the womb and the task of recreating my own interpretation of it - our one true safe space before we are thrust into the unprotected world, I tried to imagine the sounds, the vibrating watery bass and the warm closeness of everything. Sometimes in society we forget that every woman we critique and abhorrently sexualise was once a being floating around in the womb of her mother, her mother once too, and the cycle once again.

This multi-sensory experience sustains a personal yet collective memory whilst simultaneously asserting a trapped female authorship of mythologies. She is exhausted yet she continues.’

CREATING THE SOUND PIECE

Attended the Ecologies of Sound workshop, hosted at Chelsea College of Arts and led by Jake Caleb and Marlene Boschen. Here is where the hydrophone recordings of the pond were taken.

I then hosted my own workshop, which consisted of a warm up exercise of mimicking the sounds we hear around us and discussing what we felt as our voices faded into the background

Another exercise where we closed our eyes and hummed, slowly matching the pitch to everyone in the circle, which at first felt awkward and uncomfortable until we fell into a medative state, creating a haunting yet calming sound.

shared poetry and discussed how it made people feel.

What does reincarnation/rebirth/ death/decay/ nostalgia/ exclusion/ love sound or feel like to you? can you describe it?

All recordings and conversations within this workshop alongside my essay on cruelty lead my sound piece.

Included are the voices and conversations from myself, Anna Sanguinetti, @geheroes, @colemsilverman @esotericangelx, @i5lagem
